Originally from Liverpool, Connor has been working in casting with Shaheen Baig Casting since 2021, contributing to a range of independent films and projects for streamers and terrestrial television. Connor is a graduate of the first cohort of the NFTS Casting course. His background includes drama school training and experience working with young people to engage them in the arts.

Course Overview:
In a psychological thriller, the camera is never interested in what an actor shows, it is searching for what they are trying to hide. The genre demands extreme physical discipline, nuanced eye-line control and the ability to hold high-voltage subtext beneath a calm surface.
Led by feature film director and writer Giles Alderson, this intensive one-day masterclass pulls back the curtain on how thrillers are constructed from behind the monitor. Working with actual scene extracts from Giles’s feature films, including the domestic gaslighting of The Stranger in Our Bed and the claustrophobic interrogation dynamics of Sessions, actors will dissect how directors use frame sizes, pacing and paranoia to build unbearable tension.
Every actor will work extensively on camera, receiving direct, rigorous playback critique designed to bridge the gap between theatre habits and the ruthless intimacy of the lens.

Workshop Breakdown:
Morning: Deconstructing Suspicion & The Domestic Façade
The Anatomy of Thriller Subtext: We break down the grammar of tension, information withholding and the "Concealed Objective" through focused on-camera warm-ups. On-Camera Scene Study: Using material from The Stranger in Our Bed. Actors are paired up to shoot high-stakes domestic scenes where charm conceals malice, followed by immediate, in-depth monitor playback analysis.

Afternoon: Claustrophobia, Power Flips & The Climax
Confined-Space Interrogation: Working with material from Sessions, focusing on vocal restraint, physical economy, and holding dead silence on camera to let the audience "see you think." Coverage and Rapid Redirection: Putting actors through multiple shot sizes—from wide masters down to extreme close-upstesting their continuity and emotional stamina under live, professional directing. We conclude with a director's playback surgery comparing first takes against directed takes. Audition Technique: Using the skills you have learnt to put it to the test in a high-pressure audition environment, applying cinematic restraint to the casting room.

About Giles Alderson
Originally coming from a theatre background Giles Alderson was part of the Royal Court and Soho Theatre Writers Programs, where he had many of his plays read and performed before he moved to film and TV.
He has just completed the feature film Sessions as director and co writer which stars, Rupert Graves, Dan O’Reilly, Jaime Winstone, Leo Gregory, Percelle Ascott, Preeya Kalidas and Bill Fellows and is in POST on his directed studio movie Samodiva, the Supernatural Horror was shot at Nu Boyana Film Studios for Film Forge which stars Richard Brake, Sophie Craig, Jack Parr and Mirabel Stuart. His latest released directed live action feature
The Stranger in our Bed based on the best selling novel of the same name starring Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey), Ben Lloyd Hughes (Sanditon) and Emily Berrington (Humans) for Buffalo Dragon Productions has just been released onto Showtime in the USA. Out in UK on Sky and Prime.
His WWII feature film Wolves of War for Signature Entertainment and Picture Perfect starring Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Matt Willis (Allies) and Rupert Graves (Sherlock) was released onto Sky Store and Prime in Sept 2022.

This two part course will take you through from the basic sounds and features of general American to working with text, to seeing how your accent stands up under the pressure of a self tape.

The course dates run as follows:
Saturday 21 November 11am-5pm
Saturday the 28 November 11am- 5pm

In session one we will cover all of the key sounds of general American. If you are new to the accent this will give you the essential foundation you need to build upon. If you are more experienced it will be a chance to further refine and hone your understanding of the subtleties of placement and resonance we will then be putting our accents into action, playing with the complexities of text and language.

In session two we bring character into play, work shopping scenes that you’ll have had the chance to rehearse over the past week.
It’s an excellent opportunity to see how you perform under the pressure of a deadline and gain valuable insight in a professional yet supportive environment.

Material/ scenes will be different from prior courses making it suitable for those new to Rachel’s workshops as well as those who have attended before.

Rachel is an established voice and dialect coach who has worked in the industry - Theatre, T.V. and film - for over 25 years. Having herself begun her career as an actor, Rachel has a deep understanding of the needs of a performer and the vocal challenges they may face.
With a Masters in Professional Voice Practice, gained in association with the RSC Rachel’s clients include Oscar nominees, Bafta award winners as well as those working regularly in the West End and on Broadway. Theatre, TV and film companies she works with include Netflix, Amazon, Warner Brothers, BBC, Apple TV, Disney, Royal Court and National Theatre. She is also on call for many leading agents to help their talent build confidence and learn an accent quickly when the pressure is on and a big audition comes in!
